New York Jets’ RB Bilal Powell carries Gang Green over San Francisco 49ers in 23-17 overtime win in NFL Week 14

New York Jets’ Bilal Powell shows he’s an underused gem – UPI.com FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets found out what second-year quarterback Bryce Petty could do Sunday afternoon after he recovered from a slow start to direct a 23-17 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.

That is the sound of running back Matt Forte injuring his knee early in the 1st quarter.

Enter Bilal Powell into the game.

“Whenever my number is called, I just try to step up and take advantage of my opportunity. When Matt went down, I was well-prepared like I am each and every week.” said Powell.

Coming into Week 14, San Francisco was last in the league in defending the run, giving up an average of 148 yards per game to running backs. In Week 13, the Chicago Bears and RB Jordan Howard ran for 127 yards and 3 touchdowns against the 49ers. So the Achille’s Heel of San Fran was their run defense.

After Colin Kaepernick’s TD pass to RB Carlos Hyde in the 1st quarter & running back Shaun Draughn’s 4 yard TD run, the 49ers were leading 17-3 at halftime.

Powell began to churn his legs. He broke tackles and picked up 1st downs, extending drives. Even though he only had 24 rushing yards in the 1st half, he started to gain yard after yard in the 2nd half.

On 1st and goal from San Francisco’s 5 yard line, Bryce Petty handed the football off to Bilal, who broke through multiple defensive players to reach the endzone for the touchdown. On the 2 point conversion, Petty ran up the middle from the 2 yard line, bringing the the score to 49ers 17 Jets 14. Nick Folk kicked the field goal on the next possession to take the game to overtime.

In the 5th quarter, Bryce ran to his left and threw to Robby Anderson for 26 yards, who got tackled at San Fran’s 25 yard line. On 3rd and 3 from the 49ers 19 yard line, Powell ran to the left for the score, winning the game in overtime.

Gang Green’s running back finished with 29 carries for 145 yards and 2 TDs, plus 5 catches for 34 yards. Bilal Powell came through for the Jets and delivered in the clutch, with TDs in the 4th quarter and overtime. He helped New York come back from a 14 point deficit at halftime, a performance that even impressed head coach Todd Bowles.

“If it wasn’t for him, I don’t know if we win this game. He singlehandedly, from my point of view, broke every tackle he could break. He caught every ball. He ran, he blocked. He did everything and had an outstanding effort.”
