After 5 weeks, the New York Jets were giving up an average of 68.4 rushing yards per game, which was the best out of the 32 NFL teams. They contained Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams of the Pittsburgh Steelers to just 61 rushing yards in Week 5. On Monday Night Football, David Johnson ran on 22 carries for 111 yards. Going into the Monday Night game, Gang Green had only given up 342 total rushing yards for the year but Johnson and Andre Ellington ran over Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams for 171 rushing yards, which was a season high. The 171 yards are the most that New York has allowed since the last game of 2014. The Jets gave up just 1 rushing touchdown before facing the Arizona Cardinals and David went into the endzone for 3 scores.

David Johnson set the tone early in the 1st quarter at 9:51 minutes. On 1st down & 10 from the Arizona 42 yard line, after getting the football from Carson Palmer, David did a cutback move near the line of scrimmage on linebacker Erin Henderson who missed the tackle. No other Jets defensive player was able to touch the RB as he went down the left sideline 58 yards for the TD, putting the Cardinals up 7-0. In the 2nd quarter, he ran up the middle from the Jets 2 yard line on 2nd and goal for the score and his 3rd TD in the 3rd quarter also came from the Jets 2 yard line on 2nd and goal.

After being ranked #1 in the league in rushing defense, Gang Green was run over by David Johnson. The linebackers and defensive line of the New York Jets were manhandled by the offensive line of the Arizona Cardinals. This was one of the worst performances by New York’s defense on Primetime TV.

“We come here and give up 100-and-something yards. That’s just straight embarrassing.” said defensive lineman Steve McLendon.
