Oakland Raiders blast through New York Jets defense in 45-20 rout in NFL Week 2

http://Sweaty CheeseHave you ever seen swiss cheese being cut?

Well, in Week 2 you could see it happen right before your eyes as one team had their way with another team. And to see it occur between 2 NFL professional teams like the Oakland Raiders and the New York Jets made it even more unbelievable.

Marshawn Lynch runs for TD in Raiders’ win over Jets – The Denver Post

190.

That was the number of rushing yards that New York gave up to the Bills in Week 1. After seeing that atrocity, you would think that the Jets learned their lesson after getting run over by Buffalo running back LeSean McCoy but you would be wrong.

Right from the start, it did not bode well. In the first quarter, the Jets defense faced a 3rd down and 1 on their own 30 yard line with the score tied at zero.

1 yard.

Should be easy enough. And what happened?

Marshawn Lynch powered through the defense not just for 1 yard but an astonishing 13 yards. Throughout the game, he kept ramming past defenders, picking up 1st downs. This was no less evident than when he broke through the tackles of linebacker Dylan Donahue, cornerback Juston Burris and safety Marcus Maye to reach the Jets 3 yard line on 3rd down with 1 minute remaining in the 2nd quarter. On the next play, Marshawn punched the ball in to give Oakland a 21-10 lead at halftime.

The backup RB also wanted in on the fun. Jalen Richard took a handoff from Derek Carr on 1st down and 10 in the 4th quarter and ran 52 yards untouched to the endzone for his first TD of 2017.

Do you know who also humiliated the Jets?

Cordarrelle Patterson.

That’s right. Receiver.

A WR who lined up as a running back behind Carr on 3rd down and 1 and went up the middle 43 yards and scored a TD to put the Raiders up 28-13 in the 3rd quarter. That is how awful New York was stopping the run, allowing even the backup RB and a fringe WR to pile up yards and score long distance TDs.

So after giving up 190 rushing yards to Buffalo in Week 1, Gang Green was run over for 180 yards in Week 2. Guess the defense didn’t learn their lesson, huh? By allowing Oakland to score touchdowns easily at will, the Jets never led in the game and were always behind the eight ball.

Who is to blame for this atrocity?

The fault lies with all the members of the defense. From Muhammad Wilkerson, Leonard Williams and the defensive line getting pushed back by the offensive line and allowing running lanes to open up to Demario Davis, Darron Lee and the linebackers mistackling the RBs and not stopping them in the open space. And let us not forget Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, the safeties that are supposed to be the last line of defense and still let the backs to run past them for the touchdowns. The rushing yards and TDs accumulated until eventually the points piled up and the football game turned into a blowout.

This was a collective failure by the whole defense, not only in the Raider game but also in the Buffalo contest. To give up 370 total rushing yards in 2 weeks speaks volumes of the inability of Gang Green to stop the running game. LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch are one thing but to allow even backup RBs and WRs to pummel through and score TDs is just ridiculous. This defense can’t handle running plays coming at them, no matter the player who is in the backfield. Until New York learns to tackle backs and prevent opposing teams from running on them, the Jets defense will continue to hold the team back with their swiss cheese defense in the upcoming games.
