In a crucial NFL game against the AFC North Cincinnati Bengals, the New York Jets lost 23-22 in a close game. Who is to blame for this devastating loss in Week 1 in 2016?

Late field goal gives Bengals 23-22 win over Jets – News – NorthJersey.com The Jets couldn’t convert in the red zone. Nick Folk couldn’t make an extra point. And because of it, the Jets couldn’t get a win in their season-opener at MetLife Stadium.

Nick Folk
1st quarter. 3 minutes 46 seconds left. Jets 7, Bengals 0. 4th and goal.

The football is placed on the Jets 7 yard line. Nick Folk attempts to kick a 22 yard field goal but it gets blocked by defensive end Margus Hunt. In 2015, he converted 13 of 16 field goals (81.3%) and made a kick from 55 yards away. Also, his field goal attempts were never blocked last year.

2nd quarter. Bengals 10. Jets 7.

Ryan Fitzpatrick throws a 15 yard pass to Eric Decker for a touchdown. Then Nick Folk comes in to kick what should have been an automatic PAT. The football is snapped from the Jets 15 yard line and…MISS! Wide right! This was the 1st extra point he has missed in his entire career. In 2015, he made 19 of 19 attempts and was 100% accurate.

The missed short field goal attempt and missed extra point were 4 points that Gang Green needed. Throughout the game, the Jets were trailing Cincinnati and were in catch up mode. If Nick Folk had converted those 2 kicks, the score would have been tied heading into the 4 quarter. Because of the misses, the Jets were down 23-22 in the last quarter with 54 seconds left. The usually accurate kicker who is 80.6% for his career failed his team attempting a short 22 yard field goal.

Darrelle Revis

2nd quarter. 11:31 minutes left. Jets 7, Bengals 3. 1st and 10 from the Bengals 46 yard line.

The ball is snapped and then…Andy Dalton throws a bomb of 54 yards against Darrelle Revis for a touchdown. The cornerback was caught trailing Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green on a deep post route. The Revis of 2009 would have had the athleticism to at least jump and swat the ball away. But this is 2016 and Father Time has caught up to the Hall of Famer. His skills have clearly diminished. Not only did Darrelle give up a TD of 54 yards but he also allowed Green to stack up yardage against him. Time and time again in the game he was seen lagging behind the receiver. Post route. In route. Streaks. Slants. His speed gone, Revis was always a step behind him. And when the Bengals needed yards to get into field goal range in the 4th quarter and kick the game winning 47 yarder, Dalton targeted Darrelle and connected with his receiver. Revis’ weakness led to the Cincinnati star WR to finish with 12 catches for 180 yards and a TD. Revis Island is officially dead.

The Jets kicker had a field goal blocked and missed an extra point, which came back to haunt them in the final quarter. The “shutdown corner” of the NFL had deteriorated and was a constant liability in Gang Green’s secondary. Nick Folk. Darrelle Revis. These 2 players were the cause of why the NYJ lost a close game against playoff bound team.
